Career Opportunities in the Water Industry
March 3, 2026At Watertrain, National Apprenticeship Week 2026 gave us the opportunity to recognise the dedication, resilience and professionalism demonstrated by apprentices across the sector. We are proud to name Robert Fenton from Yorkshire Water as our Apprentice of the Year 2026.
Robert’s journey highlights the transformative impact that opportunity, structured development and personal determination can have — not only professionally, but personally. His experience demonstrates how apprenticeships can rebuild confidence, strengthen capability and open new pathways within the water industry.
What has your journey been like?
“Yorkshire Water gave me the opportunity to return to work after a medical retirement. I had little idea of the challenges ahead and the positive effect this would have. Returning to work has been a miracle leading to a wonderful change in that of my family and I. I rebuilt my confidence around others, developed a methodical and diligent approach to my work, and strengthened my communication skills.”
Robert’s journey reflects the wider value of apprenticeships as structured pathways for rebuilding professional identity. Returning to work after time away can bring uncertainty, yet the right support framework can provide stability, focus and renewed purpose. Through the apprenticeship, Robert was able to re-establish routine, regain professional confidence and channel his determination into measurable development.
Have you taken on any new responsibilities since starting the programme?
“Although still a trainee, I now work as a leakage technician, completing WAND risk assessments to a high standard and independently organising and supervising step tests, raising follow-on work, and developing DMA strategies.”
This progression demonstrates the practical impact of the apprenticeship. Leakage reduction and network management require both technical knowledge and analytical thinking. Taking responsibility for WAND risk assessments and supervising step tests reflects a strong level of competence and trust.
Robert’s growing involvement in DMA strategy development highlights how apprenticeships move beyond foundational learning, supporting technicians to contribute meaningfully to operational planning and network performance improvement.
How has the support from your LDC helped you succeed?
“The support from my LDC has been key, he understood my learning style, set realistic expectations, and guided me toward producing the quality of work needed for success.”
The role of the Learning Development Coach is central to apprentice success. Tailored guidance ensures learning is accessible, structured and aligned to workplace realities. By recognising individual learning styles and setting achievable milestones, LDCs help apprentices build momentum and confidence while maintaining high standards.
For Robert, this personalised support created clarity and direction, enabling him to focus on development while applying learning effectively in his operational role.
How did it feel to be named Apprentice of the Year 2026?
“It was both a surprise and an honour; while I tend to avoid the spotlight, winning has been a rewarding challenge and I hope it encourages others to work hard. I’ve really enjoyed the course and the focus it has given me, and looking back, I wish I had invested in myself at Yorkshire Water sooner. The past eighteen months have gone better than I ever imagined, and I’m grateful for how far I’ve come.”
Being named Apprentice of the Year recognises more than academic achievement. It reflects commitment, resilience and professional growth. Robert’s experience shows how structured learning can provide focus and purpose, creating opportunities that extend beyond qualification outcomes.
Looking Ahead
Robert’s journey is an important reminder that apprenticeships are not just entry routes into the industry — they are platforms for transformation and progression. They provide structured support, practical competence and renewed confidence for individuals at different stages of their careers.
At Watertrain, we are proud to support apprentices like Robert and to work alongside employer partners such as Yorkshire Water in developing skilled, capable professionals across the water industry.
