Safer water systems start with training

Watertrain expands training portfolio with EUSR Water Hygiene and SHEA Water Courses
May 20, 2025Water Saving Week is back during 12th – 16th May 2025 to raise awareness of the importance of water efficiency and highlight the simple ways we can all make a difference.
As a leading provider of water industry training and apprenticeships, we understand just how vital our water resources are. Every drop counts and these resources are imperative not just for the environment, but for our communities, businesses, and future generations.
Why Water Saving Matters
Climate change, population growth, and ageing infrastructure are placing increasing pressure on the UK’s water supply. Even in a country known for its rain, certain regions face real risk of water shortages in the coming decades.
Here is a closer look at some of the key challenges:
- The UK population is expected to rise to over 70 million by 2036
- Water usage in the UK averages around 142 litres per person per day
- Around 3 billion litres of water are lost through leaks every day in the UK
- Over-abstraction from rivers and groundwater can damage ecosystems and wildlife
- Climate models predict longer periods of drought in regions
The good news? Small changes in how we use water – at home, in the workplace, and across the industry – can have a huge collective impact.
Our Top Tips for Water Saving
We can all play a role in helping to reduce our water usage, whether at home or work. To help you to get involved, we are compiled our best tips for water saving:
Cut Down Shower Times
Did you know that cutting your shower by just 1 minute can save 10–15 litres each time?
Turn the Tap Off When Brushing
It’s a habit many of us are guilty of, but by turning off the tap when brushing your teeth you’ll save up to 6 litres per minute.
Use Full Loads Only
Remember to run your dishwasher and washing machine only when full to maximise water efficiency – and choose eco or water-saving cycles when available
Fix That Leak
A dripping tap can waste over 5,000 litres a year … leaky loos can waste even more – up to 400 litres a day.
Don’t Rinse Plates under the Tap
Rinsing uses unnecessary litres of clean water, scrape food into the bin or compost instead. Food waste is bad for water networks too!
Flush Smarter
Why not fit a cistern displacement device in older toilets to reduce flush volume? Fun fact: Dual-flush toilets save up to 7,000 litres a year per household.
Start Collecting Rainwater
Installing a water butt to collect rain is a great way to water your garden more sustainably. They also save mains water and reduce surface runoff.
Water Saving Week 2025
This year’s Water Saving Week theme focuses on Small Wastes, Big Impact. The annual Waterwise campaign is calling on everyone to join forces and Be a Water Saving Hero, to show the incredible impact we can have when we come together.
