Water Saving Week 2025: Make every drop count
May 13, 2025Watertrain is committed to developing highly skilled professionals who can tackle some of the most important challenges in the water industry. One such challenge is the prevention and control of Legionella bacteria – a serious health risk found in water systems if not properly managed.
Legionella risk management is a vital part of water hygiene and public health, and those working in the field need specialised knowledge and practical skills. That’s where the Level 3 Water Treatment Technician apprenticeship comes in.
What is Legionella – and Why is it a Risk?
Legionella pneumophila is a bacteria that can grow in man-made water systems, such as cooling towers, hot and cold water systems, and spa pools. If inhaled in aerosol form (e.g., from showers or air conditioning), it can cause Legionnaires’ disease, a potentially fatal type of pneumonia.
Key risk factors include:
- Water temperatures between 20°C and 45°C
- Stagnant water and poor flow
- Nutrients like rust, scale, or organic matter
- Inadequate system maintenance or monitoring
Preventing Legionella outbreaks requires thorough risk assessments, system design knowledge, and ongoing water treatment strategies.
Building Skills for Safer Water Systems
High-quality training is essential to support the development of confident and competent professionals responsible for managing Legionella. The Level 3 Water Treatment Technician apprenticeship includes Legionella Risk Assessor as one of its specific disciplines to ensure parity of knowledge and skills throughout the water industry.
Throughout the programme, learners gain a clear understanding of how to effectively manage Legionella, including regulations, hazards, applications of water treatment programmes and design for systems and equipment, as well as remedial options and system improvements.
In addition to theoretical knowledge, the apprenticeship places a strong emphasis on practical, hands-on experience. Learners will gain the skills to inspect and monitor water systems, and carry out full Legionella risk assessments in line with industry best practice. These skills are honed both in the workplace and during structured off-the-job training.
Crucially, apprentices also learn how to interpret their findings, compile reports, and communicate risks and recommendations – skills that are fundamental to maintaining high safety standards in real-world settings.
