Level 3 Diploma in Water Engineering

The Level 3 Diploma in Water Engineering is a knowledge based qualification that provides learners with the knowledge and understanding to support technical operational activities they may undertake in the water industry

This qualification covers the underpinning knowledge relating to a variety of job roles and is split into four separate pathways. The core units run across all pathways:

  • Understanding water sector organisational structures and how they interact
  • Understanding the chemical and biological characteristics of water and wastewater
  • Understanding water sector construction and operational processes related to compliance and the environment
  • Understanding analytical methods and techniques as applied to water sector operations
  • Understanding health and safety legislation for water industry operations
  • Understanding water sector plant identification, engineering maintenance and operation
  • Understanding employment rights and responsibilities in the energy and utilities sector
  • Understanding contract management in the water industry
  • Understanding how to analyse and address operational issues within a water industry organisation

Wastewater Treatment:

  • Understanding the principles of preliminary and primary wastewater treatment
  • Understanding the principles of biological filtration in wastewater treatment plant operations
  • Understanding the principles and operation of activated sludge biological treatment
  • Understanding sewage

Water Treatment:

  • Understanding water treatment processes: coagulation and flocculation, clarification, filtration and sludge treatment
  • Understanding water treatment processes: final water conditioning, storage and distribution, security of supply, chemicals and incident management
  • Understanding water treatment processes: process control, optimisation and commissioning of new plant
  • Understanding water resources and catchment management
  • Understanding reservoir engineering, construction and management

Water Network

  • Understanding water network systems, distribution, operation and maintenance
  • Understanding water industry leakage management
  • Understanding water quality, public health and hygienic working practices

Wastewater Network

  • Understanding customer service in the water sector
  • Understanding sewerage network plant operations and maintenance

There are no entry requirements for this qualification. Delivery takes place in a classroom setting and the qualification is assessed using written tests and assignments.
