How to Build a Stronger Skills Plan for Your Water Workforce
September 22, 2026As part of our Inspiring Women in Water campaign, we’re proud to share Sammy Edgar’s journey with Affinity Water and her experience building a career within the water industry.
Sammy shares what attracted her to the sector, the variety of her role, and how developing new skills has helped her grow in confidence while supporting customers and communities through her work on the water network.
Discovering a career behind the scenes
For Sammy, the opportunity to understand how the water industry operates and the work involved in keeping supplies running was what first sparked her interest.
“I always had an interest in being hands on for work and always had an interest in knowing what went on behind the scenes of a water company. It intrigued me to know the makings of a water company and how the supply can be affected day to day.”
Working in the water industry has given Sammy the opportunity to experience a role where every day brings something different.
“Often it involves receiving appointments for a variety of different reasons and problem solving. You will never have the same day twice, and often we are reactive, so our work involves thinking on our feet. As I say, problem solving to get the best resolution possible for primarily the customer, but also the company.”
Building skills and confidence
Developing knowledge and confidence has been a key part of Sammy’s journey, helping her understand how the water network operates and grow within her role.
“First and foremost, proving to myself that I can gain knowledge in how the water network runs, and maintaining trust in myself that I can complete customer appointments.”
Encouraging more women into water
Sammy believes more women should consider the opportunities available across the water industry and not be put off by perceptions of the roles involved.
“Absolutely. We are more than capable of completing tasks on the network, and like me, if you were worried about having the strength to operate valves, don’t be. There is always help available and different ways to carry out tasks.”
Shaping the future of the industry
As the next generation of water professionals develops their skills, Sammy recognises the importance of learning from those who have helped shape the industry before them.
“I think it’s a privilege because we can take the knowledge of the older generation, and hopefully use this to keep the network flowing.”
Sammy’s journey highlights the opportunities available across the water industry and the importance of creating supportive pathways for people to develop successful careers in the sector.
