Inspiring Women in Water: Rebecca’s Role in Supporting Future Talent at United Living
July 21, 2026The water industry is entering a period of significant transformation. Alongside major investment in infrastructure, environmental performance and innovation, organisations are also focused on developing the workforce needed to meet future demands.
Attracting, developing and retaining talented people has become a priority across the sector. Creating greater diversity within the workforce is an important part of this, bringing fresh perspectives, wider experiences and new ideas that strengthen organisations and support long-term resilience.
As part of Watertrain’s Inspiring Women in Water campaign, we are celebrating the women helping to shape the future of the industry. From operational and technical roles through to leadership, learning and development, their contributions are helping build a stronger, more capable water sector.
In this edition, we speak to Keri, Managing Director at Watertrain, about why female representation matters and how apprenticeships are helping create more opportunities for women across the industry.
The Value Women Bring to the Water Industry
Reflecting on the role women play across the sector, Keri highlights the breadth of careers available and the importance of recognising their achievements.
“Women play key roles throughout the water sector, from treatment operations, engineering and science to customer service, regulation and environmental management and, learning & development and leadership. Celebrating their contributions and achievements helps ensure their expertise is visible and helps build a strong, more innovative sector.”
Apprenticeships Creating New Opportunities
One of the most positive developments in recent years has been the increasing number of women choosing apprenticeships as a route into the industry.
Apprenticeships not only provide recognised qualifications but also combine practical experience with structured learning, giving individuals the opportunity to build technical competence while developing confidence within operational environments.
Keri has seen this positive change reflected across Watertrain’s programmes.
“In recent years, Watertrain have seen an increase in female apprentices enrol on industry specific programmes. Apprenticeships have emerged as a key driver for increasing gender diversity, providing accessible training and structured career pathways that help break down barriers. Women are increasingly stepping into technical, operational, and leadership roles, challenging stereotypes and contributing to innovation and efficiency, now making up over a third of the workforce. We are proud to be able to support apprentices at the beginning of their career.”
Creating Environments Where Everyone Can Thrive
While apprenticeships create opportunities, Keri believes employers also have an important role to play in supporting long-term career development.
Creating inclusive workplaces where talent is recognised and progression is based on ability benefits not only individuals but also the wider organisation.
“At Watertrain over half our workforce is female, I believe to enhance women’s contributions into the water industry employers need to create an environment where talent is identified, developed and promoted fairly at every stage of a career. By creating equal opportunities companies can empower women to excel in their careers, creating role models for the next generation.”
Looking to the Future
As the water industry prepares for future challenges, developing a diverse and highly skilled workforce will remain essential.
For Keri, recognising the achievements of women already working within the sector is about far more than celebrating success today – it is about inspiring the next generation of professionals who will help shape the industry’s future.
“The water sector needs skilled people to meet future demands. Recognising and promoting women’s achievements helps attract and retain talent, supporting a more resilient workforce capable of delivering essential services to communities.”
Supporting the Next Generation
At Watertrain, we are proud to support the development of the next generation of water industry professionals through apprenticeships, qualifications and industry training. Through our Inspiring Women in Water campaign, we’re celebrating the people helping shape the future of the sector while encouraging more women to explore the diverse career opportunities available across the industry.
