The ever-increasing amount of general waste produced globally poses a significant threat to clean water sources and the water treatment process. In this blog, the first in our new Insights series, we will explore the adverse effects of general waste on water treatment and look at potential strategies for ensuring a cleaner and more sustainable water supply.
Why is general waste a threat to water?
Contamination of Water Sources:
General waste, such as plastics, chemicals, and organic matter, often finds its way into water bodies through improper disposal or inadequate waste management systems. These pollutants can contaminate both surface water and groundwater sources. Plastics take hundreds of years to decompose, and when they enter water bodies, they break down into smaller particles known as microplastics. These microplastics can accumulate in aquatic ecosystems, threatening marine life and potentially entering the water treatment process.
Impact on Water Treatment Facilities:
Water treatment facilities are responsible for purifying water to meet stringent quality standards before it reaches our taps. However, the presence of general waste significantly complicates this process. Plastics and other solid waste items can clog filters and pipes, reducing the efficiency of treatment systems. Additionally, certain chemicals and hazardous substances found in general waste can pose serious health risks if they infiltrate the water supply.
Increased Treatment Costs:
Dealing with general waste during the water treatment process comes at a considerable financial burden. Water treatment facilities need to invest in advanced filtration systems, additional labor, and equipment maintenance to combat the challenges posed by general waste. These increased costs may eventually result in higher water bills for consumers, making the issue of general waste everyone’s concern.
What strategies could improve waste processes in the water industry?
Public Awareness and Education:
Raising public awareness about proper waste management practices is crucial. Educating individuals about the environmental consequences of waste and the importance of recycling and responsible disposal can encourage behavioral changes. Water agencies could collaborate with community organisations, schools, and local authorities to conduct awareness campaigns, promoting recycling initiatives, and hosting workshops on waste reduction.
Strengthening Waste Management Infrastructure:
Investing in robust waste management infrastructure is essential for preventing general waste from entering water sources. This includes improving waste collection systems, implementing recycling programs, and establishing proper waste treatment facilities. Governments and municipalities should prioritise funding and policies that support waste management infrastructure, incentivising responsible waste disposal and recycling practices.
Collaboration and Innovation:
The water industry should foster collaboration among stakeholders, including water treatment plants, waste management companies, researchers, and policymakers. By sharing knowledge and experiences, they can develop innovative solutions to address waste-related challenges. Encouraging research and development in wastewater treatment technologies can lead to more efficient and cost-effective processes for handling general waste.
Investing in Training:
Investing in robust training for new recruits and upskilling the existing workforce is key to ensuring competence. Through modern, employer-led training, the water industry can enhance the capability of workers and reduce knowledge and skills gaps which may be impacting efficiency. The new Level 3 Water Industry Treatment Process Technician Apprenticeship Standard is now approved and available for delivery to support the maintenance of site process standards for water or wastewater. This apprenticeship has been developed by a mix of employers, including Anglian Water, Northumbrian Water, Severn Trent Water, South West Water, Thames Water, United Utilities and Wessex Water.
