It’s a Knockout
July 19, 2024In addition to the delivery of apprenticeship and qualification programmes, Watertrain has extensive experience is supporting organisations throughout the water industry with specialist training needs, including hydraulics training, through bespoke interventions. In this blog, we delve into a recent hydraulics training programme delivered to a cohort of learners from Veriflo.
Day 1
Session 1 – Pressure and Total Head
The first day of our hydraulics training programme began with a session on pressure and total head. This session, consisting of a tutor presentation, interactive discussions and basic hydraulic calculations, covered the following units:
- General Hydraulics Principles
- Hydraulic Data
- Topography & Total Head
- Pressure & Total Head Calculations
Session 2 – Flow and Velocity
The second session of the day also consisted of a tutor presentation, interactive discussions and basic hydraulic calculations, covering core competencies of flow and velocity. This session’s units included:
- Continuity Principles
- Pipe Carrying Capacity
- Relationship between Flow & Velocity
- Flow & Velocity Calculations
Session 3 – Energy Principles
Up to date knowledge and skills in energy principles is key for those working on hydraulics to carry out their role effectively. This session was again led through a tutor presentation, interactive discussions and basic hydraulic calculations, which covered the following units:
- Types of Pumps
- Pump Curves
- Operating in Series and Parallel
- Surge & Water Hammer
Day 2
Session 5 – District Metered Areas
After a recap of the first day, the fifth session in our hydraulics training programme explored district metered areas through a tutor presentation and interactive discussions. This session’s units included:
- Purpose & Design
- Optimisation Principles
- Data Requirements
- Working within DMAs
Session 6 – Pressure Management
This session covered the core competencies of pressure management, once again through a tutor presentation and interactive discussions, which are vital for collaborative learning and an engaging experience. This session’s units included:
- Hydraulic Devices
- Design & Operation Principles
- Pressure Transients
- Calm Networks
Session 7 – Mitigating Discolouration Risk
The final session led through a tutor presentation and interactive discussion, this session consisted of crucial competencies to mitigate discolouration risk within hydraulics. The session consisted of the following units:
- Accumulation of Discolouration Materials
- PODDS Theory
- Changing Flow Rates & Rezoning
- Mains Cleansing
Session 8 – Assessment
At the end of day 2 and after initial preparation, Veriflo’s cohort of learners completed their hydraulic assessment. We were thrilled to announce that all learners successfully completed and passed their assessment.
Feedback
Following completion of the hydraulics training programme, some of our learners from Veriflo shared their experiences.
“I liked how relevant and tailored the training was to what we do, and Martin’s experience and knowledge really told.”
“The advanced knowledge Martin had. He answered any questions I had and explained everything perfectly. Great tutor.”
“Martin was very knowledgeable, and the session was interactive with little tasks to complete throughout which got your brain working.”
“During the 2-day Hydraulics course with Martin, I learned the fundamentals and history of the water industry/networks. Not only this, I learned where this applies in my day-to-day work and have also come away with a grounded understanding of the key theories and formulas used to ensure accurate and safe functionality and maintenance of a water network.”
