Christopher Shrubb from South West Water is currently working towards his Level 3 Water Network Distribution qualification. Here he shares his experience of his apprenticeship so far:
“I think the most important thing I have learnt on my apprenticeship is how the practical day-to-day tasks I have to complete at work fit within a wider regulatory framework. I feel like the course has given me a great understanding of the intentions and purposes behind a lot of professional practices in the water industry and it is a real benefit to know that it means that I make better judgements and can give more to my team.
The course has given me a really good understanding of why I am doing the things I am doing. For example, I handled a job yesterday in such a way that it means my company can meet its regulatory obligations towards a customer. If I hadn’t done the apprenticeship course, I think I would have handled that job differently and it wouldn’t have had as good an outcome for the customer or my company, so the course has a definite practical benefit for everyone. It will help me progress as I think I will need to know about how my practical jobs fit into the regulatory framework in order to take on more responsibility within the company in time. It will also mean I can be more supportive to my colleagues as I have more knowledge to bring to any situation.
Watertrain have been very supportive, but Paul in particular. He worked hard to make sure we had a good experience on the apprenticeship programme. Paul is very knowledgeable and supportive and very good at sharing his knowledge. It’s a good course.
It’s been a great year, and I will miss the course when it comes to an end.”
