50,000 New Recruits: Bridging the Water Industry Skills Gap

The UK water industry is undergoing a major transformation, with an estimated £100 billion investment earmarked for infrastructure enhancement across England between 2025 and 2030. This investment is expected to fuel the need for 50,000 new recruits, including 5,000 apprentices, as the water industry scales up to meet future demands.

However, the sector also faces a wave of retirements: around 8,500 staff are expected to retire in the coming years, deepening the skills gap. This skills gap must be addressed rapidly to maintain operations and support new projects – a significant task for any sector.

Digital Demands & Workforce Renewal

As the water industry adopts advanced technologies, from real-time monitoring and digital telemetry to AI and remote automation, there’s a growing need for a workforce that can manage, maintain, and innovate with these systems.

Meanwhile, a lack of uptake among younger professionals exacerbates the problem. In some companies, fewer than 10% of team members are in their 20s, despite recent recruitment effort – highlighting how underrepresented younger generations are in the workforce.

Expanding Pathways: Apprenticeships as a Solution

Apprenticeships provide a powerful response: hands-on training paired with industry-relevant education. The creation of 5,000 apprenticeship opportunities in the water sector over the next five years signifies the industry’s commitment to cultivating new talent.

These roles span a wide array of disciplines – technical, environmental sciences, digital and data, commercial, engineering, and support services – ensuring that the workforce learns skills tailored to modern water challenges.
